We are at the party end of the year, and it is time to celebrate your accomplishments no matter how big or small. Another year of life deserves a few minutes of reflection, and there is no better time than the present to reflect on your 2016 fitness and make your 2017 fitness plan for success.

If you are serious about your 2017 resolution, the following 3 empowering questions will help you make and keep it. It is important to write down the answers to the questions on a sheet of plain white A4 paper.

1. What did you do this year for your fitness that makes you proud?
During every year, we join millions of people who “try to get fit and healthy” and for many good reasons we fail to achieve our ideal weight, establish an exercise program or have a healthy diet.

Therefore at a year-end reflection, we may feel deflated and defeated by fitness and “hope for the best” in the new year.

Take a moment this year and put aside self-criticism, pick something that you did during the year that made you feel good about your fitness and write it down.

It could be as small as buying new fitness gear, or starting an exercise program (even for a few weeks), or perhaps reducing the amount of alcohol you consumed during the year.

These written achievements, no matter how small, will form a powerful motivator in making your 2017 resolution work for you.

2. What did you learn from your mistakes in fitness?
We all make mistakes that set us back, but if we learn from them, failure teaches us so much about our self, our behaviour and helps to guide our future success.

Write down one mistake that you have made in fitness and the lesson that you will take away with you into next year.

An example could be a failed diet, the lesson being restrictive diets are difficult to sustain long term.

Making small changes by introducing whole foods is more achievable for a lifelong healthy diet.

3. What are you prepared to let go to achieve your fitness?
The above question is powerful; it requires you to reflect on the one thing that you feel is holding you back from achieving your fitness and then; let it go by writing it down.

What has stopped you from exercising regularly? It can be that you have been too busy and tired, perhaps you have aches and pains or injuries and physical limitations, perhaps your family and work pressures have been insurmountable this year.

Becoming a better version of yourself notwithstanding your personal circumstances is a matter of acknowledging in writing that you have the power to let go of the reasons that hold you back and take positive steps to give yourself permission to live well with fitness.
