September 26, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

| $45

Conductor: Stephen Mould
Cello: Ruben Palma

Elena Kats-Chernin Mythic
Schumann Cello Concerto in A minor, op. 129
Young Composer Award 2015 Willoughby Symphony / Fine Music 102.5 Young Composer Award
Beethoven Symphony No. 8 in F major, op. 93

Elena Kats-Chernin, Willoughby Symphony’s 2015 Composer-in-Residence, has described how her work Mythic grew out of a simple chordal progression which had grabbed hold of her and wouldn’t let go. The title refers to a mental image of musically entering a large, mythical cave, and this fantastical, evocative piece that shows the genius of the composer’s creativity provides an extraordinary opening to a beautiful and extremely varied concert.

Never performed in Robert Schumann’s lifetime, his glorious Cello Concerto is considered one of the composer’s more enigmatic works, exploiting the instrument to the fullest whilst exploring a wide emotional scope and expansive lyricism. The concerto will be performed by Ruben Palma, the sensational cellist who captured the hearts of the audience at the 2014 Australian Cello Awards.

Outstanding Australian conductor Stephen Mould directs the world premiere of the 2015 Willoughby Symphony/Fine Music 102.5 Young Composer Award, followed by Beethoven’s tantalizing and delightful 8th Symphony to close out an engrossing concert experience.
