Whilst some of us were enlightened and inspired by the Spring/Summer fashion trends and silhouettes adorned on the catwalks at Sydney’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, others grapple with the thought of how to translate and fit couture style back into our everyday North Shore wardrobes! Equip with Living Local’s talented photographer Maree Turk, our Fashion Editor Candice McLintock was seated by the runway at Fashion Week and has interpreted these style trends for you from our fav designers.

Tony Maticevski's Show at MBFW 2016

TONI MATICEVSKI

Trend alert! Maticevski’s full circle, voluminous skirts – he featured many variations of these on the catwalk.

Hooked on’ pirates’ sleeves! Ballooning and over sized/ exaggerated sleeve lengths were ever present on and off the catwalk at MFWFA.

Still trending – Off the shoulder tops are still featuring heaviily for this year’s spring/summer.

Style tip: If you have a formal event coming up, style these voluminous skirts with sheer/ lace bodysuits.

MISCHA

Channel you inner sexy boudoir goddess – lace up corsets are back!

Need it, want it! We are crushing on these Mischa trenches!

Loving the exaggerated sleeve length and cold shoulder combo!

Style tip! If these looks are too risqué, play it a little safer and opt for a black corset paired back with black long line pants and a black jacket.

Styling Tip! Inject movement into your black-on-black outfits with fringing or beading to reflect the light.

C/MEO

Try it at home Tonal layering – choose your favourite colour and play with gradients, layers and lengths to create interest.

Now trending! High waisted pants with relaxed leg lines.

Caution: Whilst I love the cold shoulder shirt dress, the ruffles and pleating detail add unnecessary bulk and is rather difficult to pull off for who doesn’t have a column figure (straight up and down). If you like this look, find dresses with pleated detailing and ruffles in the skirt hem lines for hour glass figured ladies or in the sleeves for apple-shaped figures.

ALICE MCCALL

Wardrobe must have! Laces and sheers – If your wardrobe doesn’t already have some, you’ll need to stock up on garments with lace and sheer paneling ASAP for spring/ summer!

Trend alert! Peek-a-boo! ‘Tis the summer to show off your under garments! Many fashionista’s at MBFWA were boldly rocking their broderie anglaise playsuits and lacey dresses over their underwear sans a slip.

Styling Tip! If you have the confidence, try modifying this trend by wearing a lacey or sheer top with the same colour strappy bra underneath. And if you’re still not so sure, cover up with deep V blazer.

OSCAR DE LA RENTA

Classic, classy and colourful. Oscar De La Renta decorated the catwalk with a multitude of colourful cocktail dresses and evening floor length evening gowns.

It’s all in the detail! His collection featured clean, sophisticated and classic lines with delicate fine detailing, beadwork, lace and tulle.

Sheer beauty! Like most designers this year, there was a focus on lace and sheer fabrications.

A blast from the past! A cute update on the voluminous skirt trend, I LOVE this 80’s inspired bubble skirt from Oscar De La Renta styled impeccably with this clean, simple open back-panelled tank – perfection!

JENNIFER KATE

A love of leather! True to her signature style, Jennifer Kate featured a lot of leather pieces in her collection for spring/ summer 2016 from dresses, skirts, shorts, jackets to cropped pants.

LOVE! Crushing on these Jennifer Kate leather shorts!

Seduced by suede. Suede was also prominently featured on Jennifer Kate’s runway. I love this blue suede ensemble!

Too matchy matchy for your style? You can tone it down and make it more ready-to-wear simply by swapping this cropped top with a white or pastel tank and a pair of white high top sneakers OR/ dress it up slightly with a beige or black tank and matching colour heels.

Styling tip! I probably wouldn’t style my leather skirt this way. Style it a little smarter with a pair of heels or wedges for during the day together with a simple white tank/ bodysuit and go heavy on silver accessories.

BEC AND BRIDGE

Sultry, cold shoulders and more cold shoulders! In keeping with the trends seen at MBFWA, Bec and Bridge’s runway featured exaggerated, lengthy sleeves with oversized cuffs.

Top pick! I LOVE this colour combination marrying cool blush nudes with warm earthly tones for spring/ summer and cant wait to try it!

The perfect blouse! Seriously get enough of this beautiful blouse for spring/ summer.

Style tip! This blouse needs to be tucked into a long line open leg pant or high waisted leather tube skirt. The pant/ skirt height must be in line with the hem line of the blouse’s sleeves (insert arrow to waist of skirt)

Styling tip: White it out! Obviously most of us would opt to swap this top for a more moderate look but keep the top white for a sizzling, classic look this summer.

MANNING CARTEL

Trending! Sequins in the sun! Yes you can rock sequins during the day. Manning Cartel showed us how, pairing these dazzling sequin tops back with casual pants/ shorts. LOVE this look!

HOT! HOT! HOT! Manning Cartell’s sunset palette was such a nice break from the banal black and white trends we saw last summer! I’m especially in awe of this deep yellow hue – great job gals!

P.E. NATION

Trending now! Urban sportswear – I am seriously in love with PE Nation’s unique update on sportswear that fuses the gym and the streets together in this awesome, comfy and practical collection of urban sportswear.

Be Bole. Be confident! Bold stripes, colour blocking and giant logos play a massive role in this collection.

Must haves NOW- Retro Reebok Classics! I have been designing and stocking up on my Reebok sneakers since the end of last year (you can go online and design your own personal Reebok shoes) so I was super excited to see the PE Nation team strutting their stuff in these classic and must have shoes!
